چکیده

Viscous depletion of vorticity is an essential and well known property of turbulent flows, balancing, in the mean, the net vorticity production associated with the vortex stretching mechanism. In this letter, we, however, demonstrate that viscous effects are not restricted to a mere destruction process, but play a more complex role in vorticity dynamics that is as important as vortex stretching. Based on the results from three dimensional particle tracking velocimetry experiments and direct numerical simulation of homogeneous and quasi-isotropic turbulence, we show that the viscous term in the vorticity equation can also locally induce production of vorticity and changes of the orientation of the vorticity vector viscous tilting . © 2010 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3442477

Lee-Vortex Formation in Free-Slip Stratified Flow over Ridges. Part II: Mechanisms of Vorticity and PV Production in Nonlinear Viscous Wakes

The formation of orographic wakes and vortices is studied within the context of numerically simulated viscous flow with uniform basic-state wind and stability past elongated free-slip ridges. The viscosity and thermal diffusivity are sufficiently large that the onset of small-scale turbulence is suppressed. It is found in Part I of this study that wake formation in the viscous flow is closely t...

Large-eddy simulation analysis of mechanisms for viscous losses in a turbomachinery tip-clearance flow

The tip-leakage flow in a turbomachinery cascade is studied using large-eddy simulation with particular emphasis on understanding the underlying mechanisms for viscous losses in the vicinity of the tip gap. Systematic and detailed analysis of the mean flow field and turbulence statistics has been made in a linear cascade with a moving endwall. Gross features of the tip-leakage vortex, tip-separ...

The Role of Vorticity Dynamics in Vortex Breakdown

1 Abstract The role of vorticity dynamics in vortex breakdown is examined in a theoretical and computational study. Under the assumptions of steady, incompressible, axisymmetric, invis-cid ow, a theory is developed concerning the interaction of vortex tilting and stretching in the breakdown process. This analytic theory is then connrmed using an unsteady, incompressible, axisymmetric viscous ow...

Vorticity Budget of Weak Thermal Convection in Keplerian Disks

By employing the equations of mean-square vorticity (enstrophy) fluctuations in strong shear flows, we demonstrate that unlike energy production of turbulent vorticity in non-rotating shear flows, the turbulent vorticity of weak convection in Keplerian disks cannot gain energy from vortex stretching/tilting by background shear unless the associated Reynolds stresses are negative. This is becaus...

Nonlinear RDT theory of near-wall turbulence

A WKB method was recently used to extend rapid distortion theory (RDT) to initially inhomogeneous turbulence strained by irrotational mean flows [S.V. Nazarenko, N. Kevlahan, B. Dubrulle, J. Fluid Mech. 390 (1999) 325]. This theory takes into account the feedback of turbulence on the mean flow, and it was used by Nazarenko et al. to explain the effect of strain reduction caused by turbulence ob...
